26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused Tahawwur Rana to be brought to India, US court approves

The US Court said that after hearing and perusing all the pleadings and documents, it has come to the conclusion that Tahawwur Rana is extraditable for the offenses for which his extradition has been requested by the Government of India.

The US has given permission to extradite Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana to India. Rana was involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. A US court in California has given permission to extradite him to India. The Government of India had requested Rana’s extradition.

In June 2020, India filed a complaint seeking Rana’s temporary arrest for extradition, which was also supported by the Biden administration and allowed India’s request. District Court Judge Jacqueline Chooljian, in a 48-page order dated May 16, said the court has reviewed all documents presented in support and opposition to the request.

The Court said that after perusing and hearing all the documents and pleadings, it has come to the conclusion that Tahawwur Rana is extraditable for the offenses for which his extradition has been requested by the Government of India. Tahawwur Rana was found to have played a role in the serial attacks in Mumbai on 26 November 2008, so his extradition was requested by India, after which he was arrested in the US. During the court hearing, the lawyers for the US government argued that Rana’s friend David Coleman Headley is involved in the Lashkar-e-Taiba group and yet Rana helped him. Thus, by providing cover for Headley’s activities, Rana helped the terrorist organization and its associates.

At the same time, Rana’s lawyer opposed the extradition. There is an extradition treaty between India and the US. While giving the verdict, the judge said that Rana’s extradition to India is completely within the jurisdiction of the treaty. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said it was ready to initiate proceedings to bring Rana to India through diplomatic channels. The NIA is probing Rana’s role in the 26/11 attacks carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists.

A total of 166 people, including six Americans, were killed in the Mumbai attacks. These attacks were carried out by 10 Pakistani terrorists. These attacks continued for 60 hours on iconic buildings and places like the Taj Palace Hotel in Mumbai. A terrorist named Ajmal Kasab was caught alive in these attacks, who was hanged in India on 21 November 2012. The rest of the terrorists were killed by the Indian security forces during the attacks.
