Ajnala Case: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann meets Amit Shah, demands funds to stop smuggling of drugs and arms from Pakistan

The Home Ministry has asked the Central Armed Police Forces to send around 2,430 security personnel, including eight companies of their Rapid Action Force, to Punjab ahead of the annual Hola Mohalla festival.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday (March 2). This conversation lasted for about 40 minutes. In this meeting, several issues including the situation in the state and drones coming from Pakistan and drug smuggling were discussed. Along with this, there was also talk on better coordination between the Central and State agencies to strengthen the security on the border, after which the Center has decided to deploy security forces in the state.

Discussion on coordination between central and state agencies

Days after supporters of pro-Khalistan Amritpal Singh clashed with police and stormed a police compound at Ajnala in Amritsar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Both the ministers discussed the issue of law and order in the state and urged that the state and central agencies should work together.

50 units of paramilitary forces will reach Punjab

The G-20 summit is going to be held in Amritsar, Punjab from March 15 to 17. Prior to that, due to incidents related to law and order in Punjab, on the request of Bhagwant Mann government, the Center is sending 50 companies of paramilitary forces to Punjab. According to the information, 10 columns of CRPF, 8 columns of RPF, 12 columns of BSF, 10 columns of ITBP and 10 columns of SSB are being sent to Punjab. These troops will reach Punjab on March 6 and will return only after the programs of the G-20 Summit.

Demand for funds to stop smuggling of drugs and weapons from Pakistan

During the meeting with Amit Shah, Chief Minister Mann informed him about the use of drones for the supply of drugs and weapons from Pakistan. Expressing concern, the CM said that it needs to be stopped strictly with the cooperation of the Central Government. He sought the intervention of the Home Minister to effectively deal with this challenge. Bhagwant Mann urged Amit Shah to provide funds to modernize the state police force to effectively meet the new challenges. He said that state-of-the-art gadgets and weapons are the need of the hour to prevent cross-border infiltration and drone attacks.

Sources said a meeting was called earlier this week at the Ministry of Home Affairs to discuss the current situation in Punjab, in which senior officials of intelligence agencies were also present. According to sources, β€œIn the meeting they discussed about the current law and order situation in Punjab and also about Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh Sandhu. Amritpal Singh along with his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station and secured the release of an arrested colleague.”
