Work from home scam: An engineer from Gurugram lost more than Rs 42 lakh due to the greed of WhatsApp messages.
Work From Home Scam: Cases of online money fraud are continuously coming to the fore in the country. Users are constantly falling victim to cyber fraud through apps like digital payment wallet, WhatsApp and Telegram. Now a case of online fraud of Rs 42 lakh has come to light from an IT engineer in Gurugram. The news agency PTI quoted police officials as saying that the tech engineer was promised income in exchange for liking the video and he lost his hard-earned money by getting trapped in this greed.
The victim engineer claims that on March 24, 2023, he received a message on WhatsApp. The message claimed that he could earn extra by taking up a part-time job. In this part-time job, he had to like videos on popular video sharing platforms like YouTube.
How did the victim become a victim of online fraud?
The complainant said, ‘When I gave consent for this work of liking the video, then a woman named Divya added me to a group on Telegram app. The lady asked me to invest money claiming better returns. To start the work, they asked me to invest money and I transferred a total of Rs 42,31,600 from my and my wife’s accounts.
The victim further said, ‘Apart from Diya, Kamal, Ankil, Bhoomi, Harsh and others confirmed the transaction and soon after told me that I had made a profit of more than 69 lakhs. But they did not let me withdraw the money. After this, he asked me to transfer another Rs 11,000, after which I found something wrong and went to the police to complain.
In the police complaint, a case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unknown people who committed the fraud. Apart from this, a case has also been registered in cybercrime under the Information Technology (IT) Act.
