America: Number of Indians arriving without visa increased

There has been a rapid increase in the number of Indians coming to the US border in 2022 without a visa.

According to ‘US Customs and Border Patrol data’, in the year 2022, a large number of Indians tried to enter the US in an unauthorized manner. The number of Indians seeking asylum at the US border without documents stood at 63,927, more than double the previous year’s figure. America’s southern border with Mexico is a familiar destination for visitors like this.

In January, Congressman from Georgia Rich McCormick had said that Indian-Americans are among the best citizens living in America. Saying this, he called for a streamlined immigration process for those who live in the US, abide by the law, pay taxes on time, and play a constructive and productive role in society.

According to the ‘Migration Policy Institute’ (MPI) 2022 report on Indian immigration to the US, from October 2021 to September 2022, Indian migrants were stopped by US authorities 18,300 times at the southern border. This figure is much higher than the figure recorded last year. Last time he was stopped 2600 times.

According to Lopita Nath, professor of history and Asian studies at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, the growing number of Indians arriving illegally could serve to tarnish the positive image of the Indian diaspora living here.
According to the MPI report, by the year 2021, the number of people of Indian origin living in America is 2.7 million.

Indians coming to the US are generally highly educated and many Indians arrive on temporary H-1B visas granted by employers to high-skilled workers. Indian students also have the second largest number of foreign students studying in American universities. However, Indians are less likely to become US citizens than people from other countries.

Compared to other groups, Indians were less likely to be naturalized US citizens, indicating that a higher proportion of those arriving on temporary visas were found, the report said. New York-based lawyer Rohit Biswas says that with legal routes to citizenship becoming difficult, more and more Indians either try to enter illegally or arrive here by flouting visa laws.

According to Rohit Biswas, we have an economic system that requires some immigration to function but I don’t think we have an immigration system that supports it. According to S Irudaya Rajan, president of the International Institute of Migration and Development in Thiruvananthapuram, the number of Indians crossing the US border illegally is on the rise despite stringent visa rules and organized migrant smuggling networks.

In the year 2020, an Indian Uber driver was arrested for illegally crossing the border and taking people. When the investigation took place later, this one arrest unearthed 90 similar cases that illegally took people to the US. According to MPI data, in the year 2021, the participation of Indian immigrants in the US labor market was very high.

The participation of Indians in the workforce aged 16 years and above is 72 per cent. This participation is greater than both the foreign and US-born population. Labor market participation of foreign nationals was 66 percent and that of US-born people was about 62 percent.
