Amul Milk: Controversy in Tamil Nadu after Karnataka! Stalin wrote a letter to Amit Shah, made a big demand
Under Aavin, around 9,673 Milk Co-operative Societies are working in rural areas. These committees buy 35 lakh liters of milk every day from about 4.5 lakh members.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (May 25, 2023). In this, he has requested to give instructions to stop the sale of milk of dairy products company Amul in the state. In the letter, he drew Amit Shah’s attention to the issues arising out of procurement of Amul’s milk in the milk-shed area of Tamil Nadu. Amul has started selling its products in the southern state.
Amul is a Gujarat-based company that sells milk products in various parts of the country. Stalin said that it has recently come to the notice of the state government that Amul has used its multi-state co-operative cooperative license to set up a chilling center and processing plant in Krishnagiri district. Simultaneously, Amul plans to procure milk through FPOs and SHGs located in and around Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts in Tamil Nadu, the chief minister said.
Stalin wrote in the letter, “It has been a rule in India that cooperatives are allowed to flourish without infringing on each other’s milk-shed area. Thus, interference in each other’s procurement is against Operation White Flood and in view of the current shortage of milk, it will lead to further problems for the consumers.”
Stalin wrote in his letter, “Dairy co-operatives in Tamil Nadu like some other states have been working effectively since 1981. This is benefiting both rural milk producers and consumers and Aavin has been their apex cooperative marketing association.” Under Aavin, around 9,673 Milk Co-operative Societies are working in rural areas. These committees buy 35 lakh liters of milk every day from about 4.5 lakh members.
Stalin further said, “This move of Amul violates the milk-shed area of Aavin. This will create unhealthy competition among cooperatives engaged in procurement and marketing of milk and milk products.” Stalin further said, “Regional cooperatives have been the backbone of dairy development in the states. They are better positioned to engage producers, nurture them and protect consumers from arbitrary price hikes.” He urged Amit Shah to intervene in the matter and direct Amul to immediately stop procurement from the milk-shed area of Aavin in Tamil Nadu.
