Atiq Ahmed’s brother-in-law Akhlaq arrested by UPSTF, accused of harboring Umesh Pal’s killers

Atiq Ahmed has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the MP MLA court in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case.

In a joint operation, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and Prayagraj Police have arrested Akhlaq Ahmed, brother-in-law of Atiq Ahmed, in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. According to the police, Akhlaq Ahmed was instrumental in financing the shooters for the murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

Umesh Pal was shot dead on February 24 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Atiq Ahmed is the prime accused in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal. He is also accused of killing Raju Pal’s main witness Umesh Pal. Earlier, the police had interrogated Akhlaq Ahmed, a resident of Meerut several times in the Umesh Pal murder case. Now he has been arrested from Meerut.

SSP Rohit Sajwan told the media that Akhlaq Ahmed has been made an accused of conspiracy in the Umesh Pal murder case. It is alleged that Akhlaq Ahmed was giving shelter to the absconding accused and helping them in their escape.

The MP-MLA court has convicted gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and two others in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and six others were acquitted by the court. Despite more than 100 cases being registered against former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq over the years, this is his first conviction.

Atiq Ahmed was brought to Prayagraj by road from Sabarmati Jail for hearing in the court. He was kept in Naini jail before the hearing. A day after his conviction in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case, he was taken back to Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Jail amid tight security.

After the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal on January 25, 2005, the then district panchayat member Umesh Pal had told the police that he was an eyewitness to the murder. Umesh Pal alleged that he was abducted at gunpoint on February 28, 2006, when he refused to back down and bow to Atiq Ahmed’s pressure. An FIR was registered on July 5, 2007, against Ateeq Ahmed, his brother and four unidentified persons.
