Bomman and Bailey, the protagonists of the Oscar-winning “The Elephant Whispers”, were felicitated by President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. Along with this, the President has praised the couple of Kattunayakan tribe for dedicating their lives to the care of orphaned elephants. “The Elephant Whispers” is the first Indian film to win in the Documentary Short Subject category at the 95th Academy Awards.

Karthik Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s Netflix documentary short ‘The Elephant Whispers’ made everyone proud by winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Short category at the 95th Academy Awards. The film competes with ‘Hallout’, ‘How Do You Measure a Year?’, ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’ and ‘Stranger at the Gate’. Director Gonsalves dedicated the award to India. It was the directorial debut of filmmaker Gonsalves.
The film is produced by Achin Jain and Guneet Monga. This 41-minute short film tells the story of a family from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu who adopted two orphaned elephant cubs.
The film’s director Gonsalves talked about this short film while talking to ‘The Indian Express’. He told that he followed this story for five years. He had 450 hours of footage. He used to watch the elephants playing. Belli used to talk with Ammu and she used to show him cute moments of elephants.
