Charles Sobhraj Released: French serial killer Charles Sobhraj was released on Friday following the order of the Supreme Court of Nepal. He was lodged in a Nepal jail since 2003 on charges of killing two American tourists.
Nepal’s Supreme Court has ordered that he be deported within 15 days of his release from jail. Charles Sobhraj has been released on the ground of his advancing age.
Earlier in a conversation with news agency ANI, Charles Sobhraj’s wife Nihita Biswas said that for security reasons, we are trying to send Charles Sobhraj to his family in France by this evening. He has some problems after heart surgery. He may need another surgery. Health and family are also priorities for him.
What did the Nepali Supreme Court say
Charles Sobhraj is 78 years old. He was lodged in a jail in Nepal since 2003. While giving its verdict, the Supreme Court said that the Prison Management Regulation talks about exemption of up to 75 percent of the sentence period for prisoners above 65 years of age on their good behavior. Charles Sobhraj’s lawyers were also demanding from the Nepali court for a long time for his release.
Ishwari Prasad Pandey, the jailer of Nepal Central Jail, told that Charles has told him that he does not want to talk to the media outside the jail. Let us tell you that cases are registered against Charles Sobhraj in many countries of the world. His sentence in Nepal was to end in September next year. Charles Sobhraj has also spent a long time in jail in India.
