Coach sexually assaulted minor girls while teaching wrestling, court sentenced 5 years

The 42-year-old wrestling coach is accused of sexually assaulting girl students by taking them to a resort in the guise of a state-level sports tournament.

A wrestling coach in Mumbai has been sentenced to five years in prison in a sexual harassment case. The accused was a wrestling coach in a public school and sexually assaulted several minor girls. He was sentenced by a special court on Monday.

The 42-year-old wrestling coach is accused of sexually assaulting girl students by taking them to a resort in the guise of a state-level sports tournament. Five students had given statements about the sexual harassment they faced. Based on this and other evidence, the court convicted the coach under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

According to the arguments presented by Special Public Prosecutor Veena Shelar, in 2016 the accused was introduced to the students as Lagori coach. She was appointed to coach girls from class 7 to class 9 in the school grounds and 15 girls were selected for the same. One of the girls during her statement said that the accused was also training them in wrestling and had touched a student inappropriately during practice.

The accused later informed the 15 girls he was coaching that there was a state level lagori tournament in Alibaug in July 2016 and directed each of the 15 girls to deposit Rs 2,000 for the expenses. He later informed that the competition has been postponed due to heavy rain. On 30 July 2016, the girls were asked to assemble near their home, from where they were to travel to Alibaug for the tournament. One of them dropped out citing health reasons, while 14 others went on an outing with a female employee and the accused.

On the way the coach informs the students that the tournament has been cancelled, but they should not despair and he will take them to a resort instead. He then took all of them to a resort at Pen in Raigad district. Police claimed that he asked the girls to inform their parents that they had participated in the tournament and won a prize.

Police at the resort claimed that the accused made the girls queue up after a round of water sports and made them feel uncomfortable. Some of the girls were also touched inappropriately by the accused in the resort and in the bus. After the girl students reached home, one of them informed her parents.

Minor lodged statement against Brij Bhushan

The parents then approached the principal of the school but claimed that no action was taken, following which they wrote to the then police commissioner of Mumbai. An FIR was registered against the accused who was arrested in September 2016. He got bail in January 2017.

During the trial, the accused claimed that he was falsely implicated and had taken the girls to the resort on their insistence. He also raised doubts over the girls not immediately complaining to the lady staff or the bus driver in the bus. The manager of the resort, brought as a prosecution witness, disclosed that the accused had booked the resort two days in advance. During the trial, 10 witnesses including five students, a parent of the complainant, the manager and the investigating officer deposed.
