Coming to BJP is an excuse… Does RCP Singh want to be an alternative to Nitish Kumar in Bihar?

RCP Singh, who was once considered Nitish’s right hand in Bihar’s politics, has joined the BJP. But is his politics strong enough that he can become an alternative to Nitish?

Bihar, which is considered to be the laboratory of politics, the state from where not one but many big leaders have come out, where the movements started have affected the politics of the whole country, now in the same state, his right hand has come to challenge Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. It is believed that RCP Singh has arrived. Ramchandra Pratap Singh joined BJP on Thursday. There were speculations for the last one year, but today he took this big step and the challenge was raised directly for CM Nitish Kumar. But is RCP Singh such a big player in the politics of Bihar? Can he make his own political ground in Bihar even without Nitish Kumar? Does his joining BJP put JDU’s core vote bank at risk?

Entry into politics with Nitish’s blessings

If RCP Singh’s politics is decoded, it is known that whenever he has got a promotion in his political journey, the credit has gone to Nitish Kumar. Actually RCP Singh was an IAS officer before joining politics. He was offering his services in UP. But then when he was made private secretary to Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma, his way into politics was opened. This is because when RCP Singh was made private secretary, his meetings with Nitish Kumar started. The initial connection was made from the fact that both of them came from Nalanda in Bihar and caste was also Same Kurmi.

After this, when Nitish Kumar took charge of Bihar, i.e. when he became the Chief Minister, he brought RCP Singh along with him. He was directly made Principal Secretary from Private Secretary. This was the turning point for both Nitish Kumar and RCP and their friendship started taking political form. It is believed that by that time RCP Singh had also started showing interest in politics, in such a situation, as soon as Nitish got a green signal, he was fully ready to start a new innings. In the year 2010, that opportunity also came and RCP joined JDU. He took VRS and made a strong entry in politics with ‘Nitish’s blessings’. The award was that he was sent to Rajya Sabha on behalf of JDU. Then again in 2016, he was given the Rajya Sabha seat. The big thing at that time was that instead of Sharad Yadav, RCP was nominated as the leader of the party in Rajya Sabha.

The story of a rift in ministerial posts, suspicion and friendship at the Center

The way RCP Singh was getting political promotions in his 6-year political career, his friendship with Nitish had become a topic of discussion in political circles. Later in the year 2020, when Nitish Kumar himself left the post of JDU president, that title was also given to RCP by ignoring many veterans. That is, he was given the number two position in JDU. But it was from here that cracks started to appear between these two big leaders. In fact, it happened that during the second term of the Modi government, RCP Singh was a minister at the Center for a whole year. Kehne was representing JDU, but it was said that he took this decision without talking to the party or Nitish and joined the cabinet.

Since then, a big gap of doubt has arisen between Nitish Kumar and RCP Singh. Nitish started to feel that RCP is working to create division in JDU itself at the behest of BJP. This doubt had a direct impact on the politics of RCP Singh and when his Rajya Sabha term ended last year, JDU took a big step and sent Khiro Mahto to the Rajya Sabha in his place. Now this decision was big because it was necessary for RCP to be elected from Rajya Sabha to remain a Union Minister. But because Nitish Kumar closed that option, in such a situation RCP came to the floor from Arsh. He was neither a member of Rajya Sabha, the post of minister also went out of hand and started getting completely isolated in JDU. On top of this, the leaders in the party who used to support him, were also gradually shown the way out, that is, Nitish saved JDU from breaking up in Bihar as per the strategy and what happened to Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, Bihar I could not see it happening with JDU.

How powerful is RCP Singh in Bihar?

But even after all this, RCP Singh did not leave JDU then. In such a situation, serious allegations of corruption made that work. JDU handed over a notice to him stating that he acquired illegal property at many places. Apart from this, it was also alleged that he conspired with BJP to harm JDU. These allegations were enough to break the patience of RCP Singh and he broke his ties with JDU after 12 years. In August last year, he himself resigned from the party.

Now it was necessary to tell this whole story because it is from here that RCP Singh’s politics and his political power can be understood. In fact, whatever success RCP got in its career, Nitish Kumar was the main reason for it. His own popularity is not considered much in Bihar, he definitely comes from Kurmi caste but has not been able to become the face of that community like Nitish. Similarly, when he was entrusted with some big responsibility, even then his politics was considered ‘failed’. This can be understood with two examples. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, RCP Singh was entrusted with the responsibility of bringing the most backward people into the fold of the party in Bihar. He also held many conferences on the ground, but the empty chairs in his rallies gave a political message – he is no Nitish Kumar and his popularity is not the same.

Burglary in JDU vote bank, will RCP work for BJP?

Similarly, the 2020 Bihar assembly elections turned out to be a nightmare for the JDU when the party won only 43 seats. At that time RCP was the party president and he had direct interference in every strategy. But his strategy also failed and his leadership was also questioned. In such a situation, now that RCP Singh is re-entering politics after a year, can he become an alternative to Nitish Kumar?

Political experts believe that RCP Singh is not going to get much benefit from joining BJP. The main reason for this is that even after so many years, he has not been able to establish himself as a veteran leader of the Kurmi caste. In the politics of Bihar, Kurmis are close to four percent and are divided into several sub-castes. Nitish himself comes from the Awadhiya caste, which is the least in number but has full influence in politics. Due to this reason, Nitish of Kurmi caste became a strong face, but RCP Singh, who entered politics with his blessings, could not do that feat. The BJP definitely wants to make a dent in JDU’s core vote bank Kurmi through RCP Singh, but the question remains – does RCP Singh have the charisma of Nitish, can he become a leader of the masses?
