The cabinet approved Rs 167 crore for distribution of cycles among 3.78 lakh class 9 students studying in government and provincial schools.
The Assam government has decided to give cycles and scooters to the meritorious students of the state. These decisions were taken in the Assam cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday. It has been decided to provide scooters to girls who have scored 60 per cent and above and boys who have scored 75 per cent and above in the higher secondary examinations held this year.

From next year, the cut-off marks for both girls and boys will be 75 per cent and above, State Tourism Minister Jayant Malla Baruah told reporters after the cabinet meeting. He said the cabinet approved Rs 167 crore for distribution of cycles among 3.78 lakh class 9 students studying in government and provincial schools.
The Chief Minister called it an important step taken for the betterment of the students.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Today’s decision of our cabinet will be a historic intervention to improve educational outcomes and give wings to the aspirations of our students.”
Baruah said that the Council of Ministers approved a proposal to increase the reservation of seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and More Other Backward Classes (MOBC) from 15 per cent to 27 per cent in professional courses under the Assam Agricultural University.
The cabinet also approved the draft of the amended Assam Food Security Rules, 2022.
The Council of Ministers also approved the draft Assam Food Security Rules, 2022 amended under the National Food Security Act, 2013. The proposed amendment provides for raising the income criteria from the existing Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh to enable more eligible households to apply for new ration cards under NFSA.
The cabinet also approved the Assam Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Establishment and Operation Facilitation Rules, 2023, which will exempt MSMEs from certain approvals and inspections required to set up and operate in the state for three years.
