DY Chandrachud: When the offer to become a judge came, CJI Chandrachud was in thought

CJI Chandrachud says that in those days he was in Canada and there he had sought opinion from Justice Ahmadi.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud (CJI DY Chandrachud) is identified as a judge who says the biggest things while smiling. Very few people know that when for the first time DY Chandrachud was offered to become a judge, he was thinking. Then he sought advice from a person. That man was Justice AM Ahmadi, former Chief Justice of India. CJI Chandrachud himself narrated the entire story in a program organized in the Supreme Court on May 11 in the memory of Justice AM Ahmadi.

Whom did CJI Chandrachud consult?

CJI Chandrachud told that when the offer to become a judge came to me, in those days I was fighting a case on behalf of RBI. A dispute was going on between the Reserve Bank of India and a Canadian company and the tribunal was hearing the matter. Justice Ahmadi was also one of the three arbitrators of this tribunal. On the last day of the hearing in Ottawa (Canada), I asked Justice Ahmadi for an appointment and said that some personal matter has to be discussed.

What was the mantra given by Justice Ahmadi?

Justice Chandrachud says that many thoughts were going on in my mind regarding the judgeship. When I met Justice Ahmadi, the first question I asked was, ‘After doing so much, what is this (offer to become a judge) worth?’ He said without thinking for a moment – it is absolutely worth it… I have not regretted a single moment till date. CJI Chandrachud says Justice Ahmadi gave me a mantra. He had said, ‘Never look back, I have also never looked back…’.

Chief Justice Chandrachud shares another anecdote related to former CJI AM Ahmadi. It is said that the profession of law was not Justice Ahmadi’s first choice. However, later Justice Ahmadi followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the profession. His father was also a judge. Justice Chandrachud pointed out that Justice Ahmadi often used to say, “I did not choose the law, but the law chose me”.

Why did you have to sit at home after studying law?

When DY Chandrachud returned from Harvard after completing his studies (CJI DY Chandrachud Education), he had to sit at home for a long time, because his father and former Chief Justice of India YV Chandrachud had put a condition. When I returned after completing my law studies, they stopped me from practicing. Placed a condition that as long as I am a judge of the Supreme Court, I am not allowed to practice law.
