good opportunities in genetic engineering
Glorious careers in the field of medicine and engineering have been the first choice of Indian students for decades.
However, at the initial stage of the career, there is a dilemma somewhere in the mind of the students whether they should go in the field of medicine or in the field of engineering. A new field that has emerged during a decade and a half has reduced this dilemma of the students to a great extent.
Its name is Biotechnology. Biotechnology means a mixture of medicine and engineering. It takes the students on a journey into the exciting world of Zoology and Botany. At the same time, the ever-changing world of technology and technology always gives him the opportunity to innovate. This combination of biology and progressive technology creates a discipline known as genetic engineering that enables living beings to fight potential diseases by modifying the genetics present in the DNA code of living beings through state-of-the-art technology.
what is genetic engineering
Genetic engineering is mainly a research-based field, which is widely used in the fields of medicine, environment and agriculture. By changing genes through genetic technology, resistance to diseases is developed in plants, animals and humans. Due to the worldwide promotion of cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops, unlimited employment opportunities have been created in this sector.
Through this technology, such qualities are developed in the crops that enable them to withstand the ill effects of ‘global warming’ and to withstand the attacks of germs and insect pests. Due to this technique, the plants become capable of withstanding the effects of flood and drought. Apart from this, the amount of desired nutrients can also be increased in them and unwanted elements can also be reduced. With the help of artificial technology, new varieties or new species are also developed by DNA structure and transplantation of DNA.
genetic engineer
In recent times, the demand for genetic engineers has increased rapidly all over the world including India. Employment opportunities are mainly in medical, pharmaceutical, agriculture, private and government research and development centers. Apart from this, research in biotech laboratories, energy and environment industry, animal husbandry, dairy, farming etc. have also created ample employment opportunities. Due to the introduction of genetic engineering courses in various colleges and universities, the doors of endless possibilities have opened in the field of teaching and training.
How to make career in this field
To gain expertise in the field of genetic engineering, a graduate, post-graduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, etc. is required. Specialization in genetics can be done during undergraduate or postgraduate studies in biotechnology. Apart from this, students can pursue BE (Genetic Technology), B.Tech (Genetic Technology) and B.Sc (Genetic Technology) courses at the graduation level.
Similarly at post graduate level one can do ME (Genetic Technology), MTech (Genetic Technology) and MSc (Genetic Technology). Students can specialize in clinical genetics, genetic theory, molecular genetics, and classical genetics.
Ability
For undergraduate courses, the candidate must have passed class 12th with science stream. Most of the colleges and universities in the country offer admission on the basis of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. Whereas, for admission to postgraduate courses, a bachelor’s degree in genetic engineering is required from a recognized institute. Most of the colleges give admission on the basis of GATE score. Some universities and colleges offer admission to B.Tech, M.Tech integrated courses.
