‘I protected the country but could not save my wife, village’, Manipur victim’s ex-serviceman husband pours out pain
The victim’s husband, who was a subedar in the army, told that I was in Sri Lanka, in Kargil also in the army for my country, but now after retirement, I could not protect my wife, my home and my village.
Videos and photographs of cases and incidents related to the violence in Manipur have started surfacing. The video that surfaced on July 19 created a stir across the country. Anger is being seen among the people towards the government. Now a retired army soldier has said that he remained on the border to save the country, was also posted on Kargil but could not save his village, his family and his wife.
Statement of the victim’s husband
The husband of one of the three victim women said in an interview, ‘When the village started burning, we hid in the forest. The people who committed violence were killing animals too, so they too ran towards the forest after saving their lives. Where people were hiding, the people who committed violence also reached there. The ex-army man said, ‘A father-son duo was killed and their daughter and my wife were taken away, stripped off their clothes.’
‘I can recognize some of the perpetrators’
The retired army jawan said that a police personnel was also present there during the violence but he went to the police station from there and people started violence. The jawan told that somehow the police had run away and they got a free hand. He said that I can recognize some people seen in the video but it is difficult to identify those who are from far away.
‘Made women take off their clothes, otherwise they would have killed’
A retired army jawan who witnessed the incident also told that the women took off their clothes out of fear, otherwise they would have killed them. Their number was huge. He had a weapon. I never thought that such an attack would happen. No animal would have done the way these people did.
