IPL-like ‘Impact Player’ rule now applicable in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, BCCI also gave freedom to teams to choose

The impact player rule was introduced in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy last season, but then it had to be brought in before the end of the 14th over and the player’s name had to be given before the toss.

The famous ‘Impact Player’ rule of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be used in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy starting on 16 October. The Apex Council of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approved it on Friday, 7 July 2023.

The ‘Impact Player’ rule was introduced in the last Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, but the player had to be brought on or before the 14th over and his name had to be announced before the toss. However, now it will change from the next season and will be used as in IPL.

The teams will also be allowed to name four substitute players in addition to the playing XI before the toss. Each team can use only one of these four substitute players as an ‘impact player’. According to the guidelines issued regarding the new Impact Player rule, ‘Both teams will be allowed to use one ‘Impact Player’ in every match. However, it is not mandatory.

Veterans divided over impact player rule

The ‘impact player’ was widely used by all the ten teams of the IPL, but the opinion of the veterans was divided. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and the head coach of Delhi Capitals had said that this has almost ended the role of an all-rounder in the team.

BCCI’s Apex Council also approved the teams for the Asiad

The Apex Council has also approved the participation of men’s and women’s teams for the Hangzhou Asian Games in September-October. The men’s event will begin on September 28, with a secondary Indian team taking part, while the women’s event, which begins on September 19, will feature a premier team. Cricket has been played only 3 times in the history of Asian Games. The last Asian Games were held in Incheon in 2014. The Indian cricket team did not participate in it.

This time the Asian Games are being held around the same time as the Men’s ODI World Cup starting on 5 October. In a note, the BCCI said fielding a team for the Asian Games will be a challenge considering the busy international schedule, but playing for the nation is also important. The Indian team will overcome the challenges and play in both the categories. India is a strong contender to win the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s categories.
