Japan: Ministers accused of financial irregularities

The issue of financial irregularities has become a big issue in Japan and it seems to be putting pressure on the government there.

Under mounting pressure, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had to sack the interior minister on Sunday over financial irregularities. The development is seen as a major setback for his cabinet, which is facing allegations of scam. Earlier, Fumio Kishida had sacked two ministers within a month.

Japan’s Interior Minister Minoru Terada has come under fire for several accounting and financial irregularities. After sacking him, the Japanese prime minister told media persons, “I apologize for the frequent resignations of ministers.” I am fully aware of my responsibilities regarding his appointment.

He told media persons that he would announce the name of the new minister in place of Terada on Monday. Terada said outside the prime minister’s office that he had submitted his resignation to Kishida. However, he did not say that he was asked to do so. Terada said, ‘I have made up my mind because I should not interfere in the parliamentary discussion of major legislations because of my problems.’

Kishida made a second reshuffle of his cabinet on 10 August, hoping to end political uncertainty. Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead on July 8, and uncertainty waned as public support for the Kishida cabinet plummeted. In the reshuffle that followed, seven ministers who admitted their ties to the church were dropped. These included Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi and Satoshi Ninoyu, chairman of the Public Security Commission. Kishi was replaced by Yasukazu Hamada as Defense Minister, while Taro Kono was made Digital Minister.
