Joshimath: Dhami government will give ₹ 1.5 lakh to the affected families, will give land compensation at market rate

Joshimath: According to the district administration, 723 buildings have developed cracks in Joshimath town and 131 families have been shifted to safer places so far.

The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday announced an interim relief of Rs 1.5 lakh to the affected families of Joshimath. This amount will be given to those who have been shifted to safer places after the landslide in Joshimath.

Assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh to each family

R Meenakshi Sundaram, secretary to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, said, “Each family will be given an immediate interim assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh. Apart from the two hotel buildings marked ‘unsafe’, no other buildings are being demolished. Cracks have been noticed in 723 buildings so far.”

Regarding this step of the government, Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “Our government is taking full care of the interests of the local people. The local people who have been affected by the landslide will be given compensation at the market rate. The market rate will be decided after taking the suggestions of the stakeholders and in the public interest only.

Central team will survey the damage caused by land subsidence

The District Magistrate said that a central team would survey the damage caused to property due to the landslide and suggest a way forward, coordinating with the local administration in relief and rescue efforts. Himanshu Khurana said, “A team of scientists from IIT Roorkee has been asked to inspect buildings in the affected Bahuguna Nagar of Karnprayag, where cracks were reported.”

A study by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing found that Joshimath and its surrounding areas are sinking at a rate of 6.5 cm (2.5 in) every year. Its activities are being monitored with the help of satellite data. The temples in Joshimath remain submerged in water for some time every year.
