karnataka politics: The Bharatiya Janata Party has suffered a major setback in Karnataka. Former BJP leader and minister G. Janardhana Reddy on Sunday (December 25, 2022) put an end to weeks of speculation about his political move. He announced the formation of a new party named Karnataka Rajya Pragati Paksha to contest the assembly elections to be held in the year 2023. With this, the leader accused in the illegal mining case broke his two-decade old association with the BJP.

Janardhan Reddy said his party would follow Basavanna’s ideals and fight against divisive politics along caste and communal lines. His goal is the development of the state. He said that he would look into the development issues in each of the 30 districts.

Reddy said his wife Aruna would also enter public life and travel across the state. He also announced that he would contest the 2023 assembly elections from Gangavathi in Koppal district. Reddy said that I have never failed in any of my new initiatives in my life so far. From the days of playing marbles as a child, I am one who never gave up.

A friend is known in difficult times: Reddy

Talking to the media, Reddy said that it is only when the need arises that one comes to know who are his friends. Recalling his ordeal after he was arrested, Reddy said, “Only (former chief ministers) B.S. Yediyurappa and Jagadish Shettar looked after my wife and children and no one came. He said that when you are in good times everyone is around you. Only in bad times will you know who your friends are.

Reddy described his relationship with Yediyurappa as a father-son relationship. Reddy said the decision to form the new party was his personal decision. He did not discuss it with Yediyurappa. He said that I am trapped in a political trap and the launch of the new party is an attempt to get out of that trap.
