Praveen Sood, a 1986 batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the new Director of CBI by the Central Government. Presently he was serving as the DGP of Karnataka. Praveen Sood’s name was leading in the race for the post of CBI director. His name was finalized by a three-member selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. The three-member committee included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and CJI DY Chandrachud.

At the same time, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary had lodged a protest in the name of Praveen Sood. Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary expressed his objection to the process and demanded that the process be done afresh. Apart from Praveen Sood, the names of Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Saxena and senior IPS Taj Haasan were shortlisted for the CBI directorship.

DoPT sent a list of 115 names for CBI chief

According to sources, the DoPT had earlier sent a list of around 115 names for the post of CBI chief, including some officers who were not shortlisted. Congress leader Chowdhary raised the issue, arguing that he had not found service records, personal details and other documents of the officers in the list.

Sources said the CJI suggested that the list be trimmed on the basis of experience and seniority of the officers, following which several names were struck. However, Chowdhary argued that there were discrepancies in the preparation of the list and demanded that it be prepared afresh. He also said that the government should consider women officers and people from minority communities.

DK Shivakumar accused of supporting BJP in Karnataka

Praveen Sood, a 1986 batch IPS officer, was appointed as the DGP of Karnataka in January 2020. The tenure of the current CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal ends on May 25, the same day Sood can join. Praveen Sood hit the headlines in March when Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar accused him of siding with the BJP government in the state. Shivakumar demanded the arrest of the Director General of Police, saying he was registering cases against Congress leaders.
