Karnataka Election Result 2023: Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Jagadish Shettar has been hit hard by rebellion from the BJP. Jagadish Shettar has lost the election from Hubli Dharwad Central seat. He has been defeated by BJP’s Mahesh Tenginkai with a huge margin. Shettar has been the Chief Minister in the BJP government of Karnataka, but this time he left the party and joined the Congress, angry at not getting the ticket. The Congress fielded him from the same Hubli Dharwad seat, where he was an MLA on a BJP ticket. Shettar is a six-time MLA from Hubballi-Central Dharwad seat. Hubli-Central Dharwad is considered a stronghold of the BJP.
Hubli has been the fort of the Jana Sangh in the south
Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi had also campaigned for former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, but even Sonia Gandhi’s election campaign could not win Shettar. Hubli is the place where the Jana Sangh registered its first victory in South India. In 1968 when Jagadish Shettar’s uncle Sadashiv won.
Jagadish Shettar is known as a prominent leader of the Lingayat community in North Karnataka. Shettar is a former Chief Minister of Karnataka and a six-time MLA from the Hubli-Central Dharwad constituency. Jagadish Shettar’s father Shivappa Shettar was the mayor of Hubli. He was the first mayor of Jansangh in South India.
Before the results, Shettar had said that it is an undercurrent. People of all castes are voting for me. He had said that Congress would definitely come to power and he would win this election with a huge margin. BJP candidate from Hubli Mahesh Tenginkai told news agency IANS, “BJP will win this seat with a huge margin. BJP has a strong base in this constituency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development programs have given people a clear choice in elections.”
Whereas former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka Laxman Savadi is leading in Athani constituency of Belagavi district. BJP did not give him ticket. After which Savadi left the BJP and joined the Congress.
What did Shettar say when he was denied ticket from BJP?
On not getting ticket from BJP, Jagadish Shettar had said, “I asked everyone the reason for not getting ticket. Was it due to age? I am 67 years old, BJP has given tickets to leaders of 75 years. Do I have any criminal background? Or are there any allegations of corruption? My political life has been spotless, there is no black spot.”
