Karnataka Election Results 2023 : After the big victory of the Congress party in Karnataka, now the discussion is about the face of the Chief Minister. The names of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and State Congress President DK Shivakumar are doing the rounds for the post of CM. The question is, will the Congress be able to deal with this challenge easily after winning the elections with a thumping majority?

According to the news of the Indian Express, an aide of a senior Congress leader says that Siddaramaiah can be made the CM for the first two years while DK Shivakumar will handle the subsequent term. He said, “Congress has to plan for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the basis of this victory, so it will not be right to isolate any leader”.

What could be the plan of DK Shivakumar?

DK Shivakumar can be expected to take credit for the stupendous performance of the Congress in the old Mysore region. In this area, the Congress, performing brilliantly, has taken a lead in 30 seats. A special thing is also related to DK Shikumar coming from the Vokkaliga community. This caste is mainly concentrated in South Karnataka and constitutes about 15% of the state’s population.

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and his son H D Kumaraswamy of JD(S) have a loyal vote base in this caste. Now it is discussed that another Chief Minister from the same caste i.e. DK Shivkumar can become. Soon after DK Shivakumar played the Vokkaliga card, Kumaraswamy retorted that it was impossible for him to become chief minister while in the Congress.

Why is National President Mallikarjun Kharge in discussion

During the election campaign, both DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah repeatedly asserted that who would be the CM would be decided only after the elections, and that the party leadership and elected legislators would decide that.

The demand to make a Dalit the chief minister in Karnataka has been a long standing one and while it has been debated by political parties in public forums it has never materialised. Discussion is also going on about Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge that he can be a contender for the post of Chief Minister and he is also a Dalit.

A major concern for the Congress in the name of DK Shivakumar is the corruption cases against him, including the ED’s chargesheet on money laundering charges of over Rs 8 crore and the CBI probe into disproportionate assets. In 2017, Shivakumar and his associates were accused of income tax evasion of over Rs 300 crore, while Shivakumar himself was accused of evasion of Rs 34 crore.
