Kerala: CBI gives relief to former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in rape case, says no evidence found

High Profile Case: In 2013, the woman trapped in the solar scam accused several politicians including the CM of rape

Relief to Ooman Chandy: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has given a clean chit to former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, facing probe for rape. Its report was presented in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. The woman who had leveled rape allegations against the former CM of the state is herself an accused in the multi-crore solar scam. In a letter to the police commissioner dated July 19, 2013, the woman leveled allegations of rape and corruption against Chandy, some of his ministers and several Congress and UDF leaders, including two former Union ministers.

The woman had complained that she was raped in 2012

Last year, the CBI had started probing cases against Chandy, former Union minister KC Venugopal and other leaders linked to rape allegations. Cases were registered against a total of six people, including Chandy. Earlier this case was being investigated by the Crime Branch of Kerala Police. Later the matter was handed over to the CBI. The woman had alleged in her complaint that she was raped by these leaders in 2012.

Congress termed the move as ‘politically motivated’

Nine years after the incident allegedly took place, the CPI(M)-led Kerala government had recommended a CBI probe into the cases in early 2021. However, the government’s move was criticized by the opposition Congress, saying it was “politically motivated”. He said the LDF government did not find anything against the party leaders, and the probe was initiated only because elections were round the corner.

CBI said – no basis was found for the complaint

Sources said the CBI probe has found that the woman’s allegation against Chandy had no basis. There was no evidence to prove that she had visited the official residence of the then Chief Minister that day. According to sources, the CBI has also found that it was a fabricated case.
