Maharashtra: ‘If I was there, I would have slapped you hard…’ Union Minister Narayan Rane acquitted in the comment case on Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra News: A Magistrate Court in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has given a big relief to Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Narayan Rane. The court has acquitted the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in a case related to his (Narayan Rane) controversial remarks made in 2021. Chief Judicial Magistrate (Raigad-Alibaug) S Blue Ugale on Saturday (March 1, 2023) acquitted Rane.

Against Union Minister Narayan Rane in Mahad, Raigarh in 2021 under Indian Penal Code sections 189 (threat of hurt to public servant), 504 (intentional insult likely to disturb public peace) and 505 (statements conducive to public mischief) FIR was registered. He was arrested from Ratnagiri district for his remarks. Due to his controversial statement on Rane, four FIRs have been registered across Maharashtra.

What did Narayan Rane say about Uddhav Thackeray?

Union Minister Narayan Rane had said, ‘It is shameful that the Chief Minister (Uddhav Thackeray) does not know the year of independence. He turned back during his speech to ask how many years had passed since independence. If I was there, I would have given (him) a hard slap” He claimed that Thackeray had forgotten the year of independence during his address to the people of the state on August 15. Rane had defended his remarks against Thackeray, saying he had not committed any offense by making the remark. Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from November 2019 to June 2022.

Narayan Rane’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde argued in the court-

Union minister Narayan Rane’s counsel Satish Maneshinde said during the hearing, “Rane allegedly made a statement on the conduct of the (then) chief minister. He did not make any statement promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community or whatever.

Further, Rane’s counsel argued that the said statement was not likely to create any feeling of disharmony or enmity, hatred or ill-will between religious, racial, linguistic or regional groups or castes or communities. Manashinde said that the matter was politically motivated.
