Nepal: The number of Indian tourists is increasing
Nepal has seen an increase in the number of Indian tourists during the first half of the year 2023.
According to the data, around 1,68,000 Indian tourists visited Nepal during this period, while 97,313 Indian tourists visited the Himalayan country during the same period last year. According to the Nepal Tourist Board, 4,76,481 foreign tourists arrived in Nepal by air in the first half of 2023. This number is 83 percent higher than the pre-pandemic period in 2019. In the year 2019 (pre-Covid-19 pandemic period), 5,36,058 foreign tourists traveled to Nepal by air.
The board said that the number of Indians arriving in Nepal by air during the first half of 2023 was 1,67,605, which is much higher than the 97,313 Indian tourists who visited the Himalayan country by air in the same period last year. A total of 1,53,602 foreign tourists arrived in Nepal in May, including 36,575 Indians. However, the number of foreign tourists who visited Nepal in June remained low as compared to the same period last year.
Compared to last year, the number of Indian tourists arriving in Nepal has been higher this year. According to statistics, Nepal’s tourism industry was greatly affected by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019. In the first half of 2020, where the number of foreign tourists arriving in Nepal had come down to 2,20,815. Whereas, in the first half of 2021 and 2022, the number of foreign tourists visiting Nepal was 58,058 and 2,40,901 respectively.
