The Swat Valley has been a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban, formally known as the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). TTP was established in 2007 as an umbrella group of several terrorist organizations. It ended the ceasefire with the government and ordered its members to carry out terrorist attacks across the country.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, considered close to Al-Qaeda, is believed to be responsible for terrorist attacks across the country. These attacks also include attacks on army headquarters and military bases in 2009 and the 2008 Marriott Hotel bombing in Islamabad. In 2014, the Pakistani Taliban attacked the Army Public School in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing at least 150 people, including 131 students.
