When the votes were counted again, the fortunes of both the candidates were reversed and the candidate who was declared the winner lost by 16 votes.
The Congress has registered a historic victory in the Karnataka assembly elections. The Congress has captured 135 of the state’s 224 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party has been reduced to 66 seats. Whereas HD Kumaraswamy’s JD(S) could win only 19 seats. There were many political changes in this election, which made these elections quite interesting. Meanwhile, there is a lot of discussion about the Jayanagar assembly seat in Karnataka. Re-counting on this changed the whole game and the candidate who was losing won by 16 votes.
Congress MLA Sowmya Reddy won this seat by 160 votes, but when recounting was done, BJP candidate Ramamurthy won by just 16 votes. Meanwhile, workers of both the parties created ruckus at the counting center SSRMV PU College. In the first 16 rounds of counting, Reddy was declared the winner with 57,591 votes. But Ramamurthy insisted on re-counting and the Election Commission also agreed to it.
When the votes were counted again, the fortunes of both the candidates were reversed and the candidate who was declared the winner lost by 16 votes. After this Congress started ruckus and many big leaders of the party including Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar and father of Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy reached the counting center late in the night. Congress leaders sat on a dharna here and alleged that government machinery was being misused to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party. During this, the atmosphere here became quite tense. BBMP Chief Commissioner and Bengaluru District Election Officer Tushar Girinath also reached the counting centre.
The tense atmosphere went on for an hour, after which Ramamurthy came out of the counting center and showed a smiling victory sign. After this, there was a wave of happiness among the BJP workers and the celebration of BJP workers started outside the counting center. After an hour of sloganeering, the Congress workers fell silent and dispersed. The Election Commission announced the final result at 1 pm. Accordingly, Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy got 57,781 votes while Ramamurthy got 57,797 votes.
