People of the Rohingya community have taken refuge in Bangladesh in large numbers to escape persecution in their country Myanmar. Rohingyas are also living in India. A spokesman for the official residence of the President of Bangladesh said Indian High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma met him at the Bangabhavan on Tuesday. Then the President raised this issue. Shahabuddin, 73, was sworn in as the country’s 22nd President on April 24.

Shahabuddin replaced Abdul Hamid, whose term ended on April 23. Regarding the meeting, the Indian High Commission tweeted that Verma paid a courtesy call on President Shahabuddin and received warm greetings from President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. and discussed recent bilateral developments. Shahabuddin mentioned the growing security threats including terrorism in the meeting.

He said that Bangladesh had given shelter to the Rohingya community for humanitarian reasons, but their prolonged stay here was causing problems not only for the South Asian country but for the entire region. In 2017, due to the action of Myanmar’s army, about one million Rohingya Muslims have fled from Rakhine state and are living in camps in Kak’s Bazar, Bangladesh. India has always called for the permanent and early return of displaced persons from Myanmar’s Rakhine State and has worked closely with Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve the issue.

President Shahabuddin said that Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relations with India, which are close due to geographical proximity, shared history and sacrifices. He described the current bilateral ties as strong and unique. Shahabuddin had also participated in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. He also recalled the training he received in India in 1971 during the Liberation War.
