SC extends time limit in IOA draft constitution matter, but does not stop high courts from hearing pending cases
Supreme Court Extends Time Limit: A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Manoj Mishra was hearing a special leave petition.
The Supreme Court on Monday, July 17, 2023, extended the time for filing objections to the draft constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) prepared by its former judge Justice L Nageswara Rao. The apex court also made it clear that the pendency of petitions relating to the IOA will not prevent the High Courts from continuing to hear pending petitions relating to other sports bodies.
A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Mishra asked Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the Centre, to collate the objections and suggestions and give them to the parties concerned in the matter. The bench said it would hear the petitions related to IOA and All India Football Federation on August 11.
The Supreme Court on 10 October 2022 appointed its former judge Justice L Nageswara Rao to amend the sports body’s constitution, prepare its electoral rolls and handle the process of conducting elections to the executive body of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
As per livelaw news, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Manoj Mishra was hearing a special leave petition. The petition challenges the 2022 Delhi High Court order to hand over the Indian Olympic Association and other related matters to a committee of administrators.
The Supreme Court had orally reminded the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the last hearing that it was bound to abide by the draft constitution prepared under the supervision of the apex court and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) till till it is not finalised.
