Shiggaon Assembly Election Result 2023: Before the year 1999, Shiggaon assembly constituency has been a bastion of Congress, but now it is in the possession of BJP.

Karnataka Assembly Election Result 2023: The results of the Karnataka assembly elections will come on Saturday. This time, which party will form the government in the state and which party will sit in the opposition, along with the media, the general public is also making many speculations from their own level. This time sitting BJP MLA and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was in the fray for Shiggaon assembly seat in Haveri district of the state. He is fighting to become an MLA from here for the fourth time. The Congress had fielded Mohammad Yousuf Savanur as its candidate against him. Sashidhar Channabasappa Yaligar from Janata Dal (Secular) is in the fray. Though BJP’s Basavaraj Bommai is in a strong position, a change cannot be ruled out this time in this seat dominated by Muslims and minority communities.

Caste position on Shiggaon seat

People of Hindu Muslim and SC community are more in Shiggaon assembly seat. Apart from the Muslim community, the number of minority voters is more than 70,000. The constituency is predominantly rural and has a mixed population of farmers and people in other professions. Here the electoral equation is influenced by various factors including caste and community, economic and development issues, personal popularity and image of the candidates. There are a total of 2,09,629 voters here. Of these, 73 per cent are Hindu, 24 per cent Muslim and 0.08 per cent Christian. Shiggaon constituency is among Lingayat community, Muslim and Scheduled Caste dominated areas.

In the last election in 2018, the BJP had snatched the seat from the Congress.

In the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections, Basavaraj Bommai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected as the MLA from the Shiggaon constituency. He defeated Hanumanthappa Doddamani of the Indian National Congress (INC) by a margin of 2,471 votes. Basavaraj Bommai was later inducted into the cabinet of the Government of Karnataka. He is currently the Chief Minister of the state. Earlier in the elections held in 2013, Hanumanthappa Doddamani of INC won the seat by defeating SI Chikkanagoudra of BJP.

The Shiggaon constituency is seen as the gateway to the northern districts of Karnataka and is a stronghold of the BJP. Powerful Congress leader S Nijalingappa became the first Chief Minister of unified Karnataka in 1967 after being elected unopposed from Shiggaon. Prior to 1999, the constituency was a Congress bastion.
