In the Gyanvapi case, the Allahabad High Court while giving a major verdict has allowed carbon dating of the alleged Shivling. The court has directed the ASI i.e. Archaeological Survey of India to do carbon dating. It has also been emphasized that the said structure should not be damaged in any way during carbon dating.

The great thing is that with this decision, the Allahabad High Court has also canceled the order of the Varanasi court where it was said to maintain the status quo. In fact, in this case, the Supreme Court itself had said to maintain the status quo, that is why when a petition for carbon dating of the alleged Shivling was filed in the Varanasi court, the court refused to accept it. But that order was challenged in the High Court and now ASI has been allowed to do carbon dating.

By the way, the order issued by the High Court was guessed only when it was asked during the hearing whether carbon dating could be carried out without any damage. In fact, in this case, the court had asked Manoj Kumar Singh, advocate of the central government, whether carbon dating is possible without harming the Shivling? To this the answer was given in yes and since then there were speculations that carbon dating may be allowed to know the real age of this alleged Shivling.
