Siddique Kappan: Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan granted bail by Allahabad HC, verdict in money laundering case
Siddiqui Kappan got bail from the Supreme Court in other cases along with UAPA, but he remained in jail due to money laundering case.
Kerala Journalist: Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan has got bail from the Allahabad High Court. The court gave him relief in the money laundering case. Kappan was in jail for two years. In other cases with UAPA, he got bail from the Supreme Court, but because of this ED case, he remained in jail.
The Supreme Court had granted conditional bail to Kappan. He will have to stay in Delhi for the next 6 weeks after his release from the jail in Uttar Pradesh and after that he will be able to go to Kerala. Apart from this, every Monday he will have to attend the police station. Along with this, your passport will also have to be surrendered.
ED had filed charge sheet against the accused in February last year
Kappan had moved the High Court after he was denied bail by a Lucknow court. The single judge bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh granted him bail. Earlier this month, a Lucknow court had framed charges against Kappan and six others in the PMLA case. The ED had filed a prosecution complaint against the accused in February last year. The other accused are KA Rauf Sheriff, Atiqur Rehman, Masood Ahmed, Mohd Alam, Abdul Razzaq and Ashraf Khadir.
What is the matter?
Police claimed that the accused are members of banned outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) and its student wing Campus Front of India (CFI). Kappan was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police in October 2020 and booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), an anti-terror law. At that time, Kappan was allegedly on his way to Hathras to cover the incident of gangrape and murder of the girl. The police alleged that Kappan was part of a conspiracy to disturb peace in the area. His lawyers claimed that he was on his way to report a case involving the woman.
