Supreme Court got five more judges: CJI administered oath to 5 judges of SC

Supreme Court: Justice PV Sanjay Kumar was the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, while Justice Amanullah Patna and Justice Manoj Mishra were the judges of the Allahabad High Court.

Supreme Court: Chief Justice of the Supreme Court DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to five more judges on Monday (6 February 2023). After this, now the total number of judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 32. Justices Pankaj Mittal, Sanjay Karol, PV Sanjay Kumar, Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Manoj Mishra are among the judges who took oath. For this, the swearing-in ceremony was organized in the Supreme Court auditorium this morning.

It is known that the SC Collegium headed by the CJI had recommended for the promotion of five judges on December 13, 2022. Please tell that Justice Mittal was the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court while Justice Karol was the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. While Justice PV Sanjay Kumar was the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice Amanullah Patna and Justice Manoj Mishra were the judges of the Allahabad High Court.

The total number of judges is 32:

Explain that the maximum number of judges in the Supreme Court can be 34. Till now the number of judges in the Supreme Court was 27. With the new appointments, there are now two vacancies left in the Supreme Court. Even the recommendation for promotion of five judges was pending with the government. The Supreme Court Collegium had on January 31 recommended the names of Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Arvind Kumar to fill the remaining two vacancies.

Significantly, this year nine judges are going to retire. Justice Abdul Nazeer has also retired in the month of January this year itself. And Justice MR Shah will retire in May. And in June this year, Justices KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi and V Ramasubramaniam will retire.

Apart from this, Justice Krishna Murari is also going to retire in July, while Justice Ravindra Bhatt will retire in October and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in December. It is known that the tenure of Justice DY Chandrachud as CJI is till November 2024. During this, he will have to make 19 judicial appointments during his tenure.
