Supreme Court notice to Mamta government in ‘The Kerala Story’ ban case, CJI asked- If the film can run peacefully in other states then why not in Bengal?

West Bengal government has banned The Kerala Story. On the other hand, theater owners in Tamil Nadu have decided not to screen the film in theatres.

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the West Bengal government on a plea by the producers of the film ‘The Kerala Story’. The producers of the film had filed a petition in the court challenging the West Bengal government’s decision to ban the film’s release in the state. The Supreme Court also issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government on the ban on the film in the state.

The Kerala Story banned in West Bengal

The petition filed against the ban on the film ‘The Kerala Story’ in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu was heard in the Supreme Court today. The bench of Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha conducted the hearing. Meanwhile, CJI DY Chandrachud issued a notice to the West Bengal government on the petition of the filmmaker saying that if the film can run peacefully in other states then why can’t it run in West Bengal. The CJI raised the question why the West Bengal government does not want to allow the film to run while in other states the film is running peacefully.

Theater owners will not screen ‘The Kerala Story’ in theaters in Tamil Nadu

The Supreme Court while issuing notices to Tamil Nadu and West Bengal government said that if people do not want to watch then it is their choice but why the West Bengal government has banned ‘The Kerala Story’. CJI Chandrachud has fixed May 17, 2023 as the date of next hearing in this matter. During the hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for West Bengal, argued that according to intelligence reports, law and order situation could worsen due to the film. The West Bengal government also said that the filmmaker should approach the High Court in this matter.

Kerala High Court refused to stay the release of the film

The West Bengal government has banned the film. On the other hand, theater owners in Tamil Nadu have decided not to screen the film in theatres, for which the producers have moved the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the Kerala High Court had refused to stay the release of the film on 5 May. A bench of Justices N Nagresh and Sophie Thomas, after going through the teaser and trailer of the film, determined that it had nothing against Islam or Muslims but was about the terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
