T20 World Cup: Shoaib Malik wants Babar Azam to leave Pakistan captaincy, Misbah-ul-Haq strongly criticized the team management

In the match of ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistani bowlers restricted the Indian team to a below-average total of 119 runs. After this, Mohammad Rizwan almost brought Pakistan to the threshold of victory. When Rizwan was out, Pakistan had to score 40 runs in 35 balls and had 6 wickets left. Despite this, Pakistan’s failure in the run chase angered some former cricketers.

Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik launched a scathing attack on the batting style of captain Babar Azam and the senior players of the team after their 6-run loss against India in the T20 World Cup. Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq strongly criticized the team management.

Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik said on Ten Sports, ‘I have been saying for a long time that please leave the captaincy. You are a great player and you will be able to show your class only when you do not have any additional responsibility. If Babar stays away from captaincy, it will be good for him.’

When will your brain work: Shoaib Malik

Shoaib Malik assessed Pakistan’s batting performance, especially the performance of their two senior players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Shoaib Malik said, ‘People keep talking about the strike rate of Babar and Rizwan, so you brought in Sam Ayub. 120 runs had to be scored. Why were you trying to improve your strike rate yesterday? The stage was set in every way. If as a leader and batsman, your mind does not work in such situations, then when will it work?’

I did not understand Rizwan’s shot: Shoaib Malik

Shoaib Malik also said, ‘I am forced to say today that we should stop supporting the main players of this team in the T20 format.’ Shoaib Malik also questioned Mohammad Rizwan’s shot selection against India. He said, ‘I did not understand that shot of Rizwan.’

Shoaib Malik said, ‘They (India) called their main bowler to take wickets. Rizwan has been playing for so long and is captaining in the PSL. He should be familiar with the situation and raise his hand and say this is my match.’

Pakistan will take on Canada at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Tuesday. Two consecutive defeats (to USA and India) have put Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the T20 World Cup 2024 in jeopardy.

Misbah pointed out serious errors in Pakistan’s approach during the run chase, particularly in not utilising middle-order batsman Iftikhar Ahmed properly. Iftikhar went in to bat at No. 7 against India despite being the only specialist batsman in the middle order.

Misbah said on HUM Sport, ‘There is no confidence in the middle order. It is a simple matter. We use them the way we want, whether it is Iftikhar or whoever plays in the middle order. When his numbers are the way they are, even if he is run-a-ball, then we do not send him. His turn comes two times in a year, and he also gives innings in such situations. If you have played middle order batsmen, then why are you not sending him in his number.’

Elaborating on the batting order decisions, Misbah questioned the logic behind sending all-rounders ahead of Iftikhar on a challenging New York pitch. He stressed that on pitches where power hitting is less effective, assessing the situation is key.

Misbah said, it’s a simple thing, if Iftikhar is playing, he is the batsman. Imad Wasim went before him, then Shadab Khan went before him and he was the last batsman. You are sending him at number 7, and all this is going on. On a pitch where you know that power hitting is not needed. There is a need to assess the situation.
