Thailand Open 2023: Kiran George continues to shine, will play quarter-finals of BWF 500 tournament for the first time
Odisha Open 2022 winner Kiran will take on the winner of the match between Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong and Toma Junior Popov of France in the last eight on Friday.
Indians in Thailand Open: India’s young badminton player Kiron George continues his impressive run in the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament. After a big upset in the first round, Kiran made it to the quarterfinals for the first time by defeating world number 26 Wang Hong Yeng of China here on Thursday. Apart from her, Ashmita Chilha also reached the pre-quarterfinals but could not progress further.

Kiran, ranked No. 59 in the BWF rankings, defeated his higher-ranked Chinese 21-11, 21-19 in 39 minutes in the pre-quarterfinals. This will be the first time that this player will play the quarterfinals of a BWF 500 tournament. Kieran will take on the winner of the match between Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus and France’s Toma Junior Popov in the last eight on Friday.
Ashmita got defeated
In women’s singles, Ashmita Chaliha lost 18-21 13-21 to Olympic and three-time world champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the pre-quarterfinals. Former world number 11 Sameer Verma, who recently won the Slovenia Open, also lost 15-21 15-21 to Magnus Johansen of Denmark.
PV Sindhu out in first round
Earlier on Wednesday, former world champion PV Sindhu suffered a 8-21 21-18 18-21 defeat against Canada’s Michelle Lee in the first round match which lasted 62 minutes. Tokyo Olympian Praneeth too went down 14-21 16-21 against France’s Christo Popov. Orleans Masters winner Priyanshu Rajawat also crashed out in the first round.
