Two accused of killing Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s father arrested after 33 years, two killed in encounter, one in jail
DG Swain said that the CBI is probing the matter. Both have been handed over to the agency.
Jammu and Kashmir Police has arrested two accused involved in the case 33 years after the murder of Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s father. Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq was assassinated in May 1990. The two arrested accused also include the terrorist who entered the Mirwaiz’s room and opened fire on him.
Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq, father of Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was the president of the All Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee. Police said that two accused involved in the murder were absconding. The prime accused, Abdullah Bangroo, was killed in an encounter. Another accused Abdul Rehman Shigan was also killed in an encounter. An accused is serving a sentence in jail.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Special DG (CID) RR Swain informed that Javed Bhat alias Azmat Khan and Zahoor Bhat alias Bilal had managed to escape. Among the five terrorists, it was Zahoor who entered the Mirwaiz’s room and opened fire on him. He said that the absconding accused were arrested after 33 years. Now a case will be filed against him. However, the DG refused to disclose how the two policemen got hold of them and from where they were arrested.
Swain told that the CBI is probing the matter. Both have been handed over to the agency. Both the hands could not touch after the incident. After that he was declared a fugitive. He says that both the accused went to Nepal along with Pakistan during absconding. A few years ago, he came back to Kashmir and started living. Swain said that one of the accused in the murder is in jail and is serving a life sentence.
There were massive protests in Jammu and Kashmir following the Mirwaiz’s assassination. Security forces fired to control the people, in which more than a dozen people were killed. These people were protesting against the government in Down Town of Srinagar. Then the investigation was handed over to the CBI.
