BJP contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1984

BJP’s Chandupatia Reddy won from Hanamkoda in Andhra Pradesh. He defeated former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. The second seat was Mehsana Lok Sabha in Gujarat, from where AK Patel of BJP won the election.

BJP got big success in Ram wave

After this, BJP’s seats increased in the 1989 elections and it reached 86. Means BJP’s seats increased from 2 to 86 in its second election itself. Re-election was held in 1991 and during that time BJP was agitating for the construction of Ram Mandir. BJP got 120 seats in this election, that means BJP’s seats kept on increasing.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee became PM for the first time

After this Lok Sabha elections were held in 1996 and BJP got 161 seats. During this, Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the first BJP leader to hold the post of Prime Minister. However, this government fell within 13 days.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee became PM again

After this, Lok Sabha elections were held in 1998 and BJP won 182 seats. BJP had emerged as the single largest party, so they were invited to form the government. Atal Bihari Vajpayee took oath as the Prime Minister. This government fell after 13 months as the AIADMK withdrew support.

After this, no party claimed to form the government, after which the Lok Sabha was dissolved. Loksabha elections were again held in the country in 1999 and BJP got 182 seats. After this, BJP formed a government in alliance with other parties and Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the Prime Minister for the third time. This time the government lasted for full 5 years.

BJP’s crushing defeat

When the Lok Sabha elections were held in 2004, the seats of BJP decreased and BJP got 138 seats. Whereas Congress emerged as the single largest party. Congress got 145 seats in the elections. The Congress formed a coalition government and the government lasted for five years.

When the Lok Sabha elections were held in 2009, the seats of the Congress party increased during that time and the party won 206 seats. While BJP’s seats reduced to 116.

BJP created history under the leadership of Narendra Modi

After this, the BJP changed its strategy and in 2013 Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was declared as the prime ministerial candidate by the party. BJP contested the election under the leadership of Narendra Modi and the party got great success. The BJP alone crossed the majority mark in the Lok Sabha elections, winning 282 seats, while the NDA’s tally crossed 350.

BJP came back to power with absolute majority

After this, Lok Sabha elections were held in 2019 and BJP got a bigger victory this time. The BJP alone won 303 seats, while the NDA’s tally reached 353. Narendra Modi again became the Prime Minister of the country. This happened for the first time when a government with absolute majority came back to power in the country.
