U19 Women T20 WC Final: Team India dominated England on Sunday in the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup final. The England team was all out for 68 runs. The foundation of this spectacular performance was laid by Archana Devi. She got off to a great start by dismissing Grace Scrivens and Niah Holland. Behind this success of Archana Devi, a resident of Kertai Purva village in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, is the hand of her stubborn mother Savitri Devi, who had to listen to many taunts. When her husband and son died of cancer due to snake bite, she was called a witch.

Not only this, when Savitri Devi decided to make Archana Devi a cricketer, her relatives said that she was sending her daughter on the wrong path. This did not deter Savitri Devi and she got her cricket-addicted daughter admitted to the girls’ boarding school ‘Kasturba Gandhi Residential Balika Vidyalaya’ in Moradabad, 345 km from the village. After doing this, the people of the neighborhood used to accuse and taunt them of putting their daughter in wrong business.

put the girl in the wrong business

“The girl was sold,” Savitri Devi told The Indian Express over the phone. The girl has been put in the wrong business. He used to say all these things on my face. Everyone’s attitude has changed after the success of Archana Devi. “My house is full of guests now and I don’t have enough blankets for them,” said Beti on playing in the U-19 Women’s World Cup final. The neighbors who never drank a glass of water from my house are now helping me.”

witch house

Archana Devi’s father Shivaram died in 2008 due to cancer. The family was heavily in debt and Savitri had the responsibility of raising three young children. In 2017, his younger son Wise Singh died of snake bite. Neighbors and relatives did not spare him even then. Archana Devi’s elder brother Rohit Kumar says, “The villagers used to call my mother a witch. They used to say that first she ate her husband, then her son, on seeing them they used to change the way, our house was called the witch’s house.

Brother’s job went in lockdown

During the first lockdown in March 2022, Rohit lost his job in a garment factory at the Kapashera border in New Delhi. He tells that his mother had to endure a lot of torture to bring up her children. He said, “We face floods every year. Half of the time our fields are filled with water from the river Ganga. We depended on the milk of our cow and buffalo (one each). We were alive for so many years because of my mother. She pressurized me to complete my graduation and now wants me to prepare for a government job.”

Fulfilled the last wish of the deceased son

Even after facing so much in life, Savitri Devi kept moving forward. She desperately wanted to fulfill the last wish of her deceased son. He asked Archana Devi to let him fulfill his dream. Rohit said, “She used to play cricket with Bade Budhiman for just one year. He hit a shot and the ball went into a building under construction, which we didn’t build after dad died. He used the bat to get the ball out of the wreckage every time. This time he used his hands and got bitten by a cobra. He died in my arms on the way to the hospital. His last words were ‘give cricket to Archana Devi’. When she went back to her school after Budhiman’s death, she started taking cricket seriously and my mother never stopped her.”
