It has been told in the statement that the BSF jawans tried to pacify the crowd but it slowly started moving towards them. The people present in the crowd had sticks and rods.
Drug supply is a major problem in India’s border states. On May 24, the BSF arrested a local youth in West Bengal in this connection. This arrest was not an easy task for BSF. In fact, as soon as the BSF arrested the lift youth in the drug supply work, immediately a crowd of local people gathered and started protesting.
The case pertains to Bira village in 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Tension prevailed here on May 24 between BSF jawans and a group of locals when the jawans were conducting a raid to nab drug peddlers.
As per information provided by BSF, the incident took place when the jawans of Border Outpost Ramchandrapur of 107 Battalion under South Bengal Frontier received information that a large quantity of ganja was kept in an abandoned house in Bira village near the border.
Responding to information received from informers, the jawans laid an ambush from all sides of the place and at around 9:45 they reached near the Tin House and saw two smugglers packing ganja in plastic packets.
The press release issued by the BSF said, “One of the smugglers fled the scene as the jawans approached them while the other was caught by the jawans. When the BSF personnel were searching the surrounding area, a mob of around 150-200 men and women gathered and demanded the release of the smuggler who was caught.”
It has been told in the statement that the BSF jawans tried to pacify the crowd but it slowly started moving towards them. The people present in the crowd had sticks and rods. Many of them were shouting ‘Maro-Maro’. When the jawans realized that the mob was moving towards them with the intention of attacking, a jawan fired one round in the air but the mob did not retreat. Meanwhile, when the jawans started taking the arrested smugglers and the seized goods towards the border out post, the crowd started pelting stones.
BSF further told that when the stone pelting started, the jawans fired one more round but the crowd remained adamant to release the smuggler. For this reason, the BSF jawans fired several more rounds in the air one after the other and were able to bring the arrested smuggler along with the drug to the border out post.
The smuggler arrested by BSF is 22 years old. He has been identified as Misanto Ghosh, a resident of Ramchandrapur village. During interrogation, Misanto confessed that he is involved in smuggling since 2021. He works for Shaheed Mandal (Laltu) of Bira village. Laltu buys ganja from Odisha. During this, he also told that the name of the second smuggler who fled from the scene is Ronnie Mandal. BSF has handed over Misanto to Bangaon police station police.
