Watch: Mirabai Chanu had to settle for a silver medal in the World Championships, lifted 200 KG despite a wrist injury

Indian Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu: Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal at the Weightlifting World Championships with a total lift of 200 kg.

Tokyo Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was unable to perform at her best due to a wrist injury. Despite this, Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the World Championships by lifting a total of 200 kg. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu, competing in the 49kg category, managed a lift of 87kg in snatch and her best effort of 113kg in ‘clean and jerk’ late on Tuesday night in Bogota, Colombia. Keep on lifting

The Indian player finished behind Jiang Huihua of China. Jiang Huihua of China won the gold medal with a lift of 206 kg (93 kg+113 kg). Hou Zhihua of China won the bronze medal with a lift of 198 kg (89 kg+109 kg). Hou Zhihua won the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics. This is Mirabai Chanu’s medal in the World Championship. The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist had earlier won gold in 2017.

Chief coach Vijay Sharma told PTI, ‘We were not taking any pressure for this tournament. This is the weight Mira lifts regularly. From now on, we will start gaining weight and improving. Mirabai Chanu, who won the gold medal at the World Championships in 2017, suffered a wrist injury during a training session in September.

However, Mirabai Chanu also participated in the National Games in October despite being injured. Vijay Sharma said, ‘We can’t do much (about the injury) because we didn’t want to miss the World Championship. Now we will focus on his wrist as we have a lot of time before the next tournament.

Mirabai Chanu, competing in her first international tournament after winning the Commonwealth Games gold, had a disappointing snatch season. Mirabai started with a lift of 84 kg, but her second attempt of 87 kg was deemed unsuccessful. Mirabai Chanu, as expected, did not go for the much-anticipated 90 kg lift.

In her final attempt, the 28-year-old wobbled a bit but managed to lift the 87kg barbell. This is one kilogram less than his personal best in this category. During this Mirabai’s wrist was bandaged.

After the snatch session, Mirabai Chanu set the highest clean and jerk entry weight, but her first attempt of 111kg was not considered a lift as her left elbow wobbled slightly. The Indian camp challenged the verdict but the judge upheld it. However, this was followed by world record holder Mirabai Chanu lifting 111 kg and 113 kg in her last two attempts respectively and won silver in overall and clean and jerk.
