Supreme Court Lifts Stay On WFI Elections: Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Federation told the Supreme Court in its application that the elections were stayed by the High Court on a third party petition.

The Supreme Court has lifted the stay imposed by the Gauhati High Court on the elections to the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India. Last month (in June 2023), in a special hearing on Sunday, the Gauhati High Court stayed the elections while hearing a petition filed by the Assam Wrestling Association.

A bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice SV Bhatti also issued notice on a plea by the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association and stayed the interim order passed by the High Court.

In a petition filed through advocate Anuj Tyagi against the Gauhati High Court order, the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association told the Supreme Court that the elections were stayed by the High Court on a third party petition.

The counsel for the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association told the Supreme Court that the elections had to be rescheduled again while disputes between different states are resolved. He said the High Court had extended the stay on July 17.

Wrestling News: Wrestling Federation of India elections postponed again, WFI lawyers did not appear in court

Let us tell you that the Wrestling Federation of India elections were to be held on July 11, but in a petition filed in the Gauhati High Court, the Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) claimed that it should become a member of the WFI with voting rights. But on 15 November 2014 the National Federation refused to recognize him, despite the recommendation of the Executive Committee.

The resolution was passed under the chairmanship of Brij Bhushan Singh.

The proposal to give affiliation to the Assam Wrestling Federation was passed in the Executive Committee meeting of Wrestling Federation of India held in 2014 under the chairmanship of Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing President. Brijbhushan Sharan Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by many female wrestlers at present.

The Delhi Police has filed a charge sheet in the court in the matter. Earlier, several top wrestlers of the country, including Olympians Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, staged a sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
