In 2017, a war of succession in the Samajwadi Party came to the fore. The matter had also reached the Election Commission. The Election Commission handed over the party name and symbol to Akhilesh Yadav.
The battle for control of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is on. Both uncle Sharad Pawar and nephew Ajit Pawar have reached the Election Commission regarding this matter. The matter is now in the hands of the Election Commission. The Election Commission has to decide who is the rightful owner of the party name and election symbol. Some similar war was seen in the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh when Akhilesh Yadav himself stood against his father regarding the claim on the party. In 2017, the dispute over seat sharing in the elections increased so much that both the camps reached the Election Commission regarding the party symbol. Then Mulayam Singh Yadav, along with former minister Shivpal Yadav, Amar Singh and Jaya Prada reached the Election Commission office and claimed the party’s election symbol cycle. He said that Akhilesh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav are no longer members of the party and they have captured the party in an unconstitutional manner. After this, Ram Gopal presented his side in the Election Commission on behalf of Akhilesh Yadav.
How the discord between Mulayam and Akhilesh increased
December 29, 2015 – For the first time the infighting in the party was publicly seen when Shivpal Yadav sacked three leaders close to the Chief Minister for their involvement in anti-party activities, only after that speculations started that Akhilesh Yadav Saifai will not come to the festival.
January 1, 2016 – Akhilesh Yadav participated in the program on the fourth day of Saifai Festival.
June 2, 2016 – Akhilesh Yadav sacked cabinet minister Balram Yadav for forging an alliance with Mukhtar Ansari’s party and since then the tussle within the Samajwadi Party increased. On June 25, Samajwadi Party broke the alliance with Mukhtar Ansari’s party.
27 June 2016 – Balram Yadav was again made a cabinet minister. Shivpal Yadav was present at the swearing-in ceremony while Akhilesh Yadav stayed away from it.
August 14, 2016 – Shivpal Yadav threatened to resign, accusing party leaders of land buying and selling. Mulayam Singh Yadav warned Akhilesh Yadav that if Shivpal Yadav resigns, the party would split into two.
September 13, 2016 – Akhilesh Yadav sacked Chief Secretary Deepak Singhal, who was close to Shivpal Yadav. Attended a program in Delhi on the invitation of Chief Secretary Amar Singh. Akhilesh Yadav was annoyed by this. After the meeting of Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh, Mulayam Singh removed Akhilesh Yadav from the post of State President of Samajwadi Party. Taking revenge for this, Akhilesh Yadav removed all the close associates of Shivpal Yadav from government posts.
14 September 2016 – Shivpal Yadav took out a huge rally with his supporters in Saifai. Mulayam Singh Yadav called Shivpal Yadav and called him to meet him in Delhi. Akhilesh Yadav blamed Amar Singh for all these incidents.
15 September 2016 – Shivpal Yadav resigned from all government and party posts. Akhilesh Yadav did not accept his resignation. In the midst of this conflict, Mulayam Singh comes from Delhi to Lucknow and tries to bring about a reconciliation between the two.
September 16, 2016 – Mulayam Singh Yadav arrives in Lucknow and refuses to accept Shivpal Yadav’s resignation and Shivpal’s close aides are re-inducted into the government.
October 15, 2016 – Mulayam Singh Yadav rejects the talk of infighting in the Samajwadi Party, but at the same time rejects the proposal of Akhilesh Yadav to contest the election on the Chief Ministerial face.
30 December 2016 – Akhilesh Yadav takes out the list of candidates parallely. After this Mulayam Singh expels Akhilesh Yadav from the party for 6 years. The very next day, Akhilesh Yadav holds a meeting with 200 MLAs and they are again kept in the party.
January 1, 2017 – Akhilesh Yadav is made the national president of the Samajwadi Party and Mulayam Singh Yadav is made the guide. Mulayam Singh Yadav called the process of his removal from the post of National President illegal.
January 2, 2017 – Mulayam Singh Yadav approaches the Election Commission and stakes claim on the party’s election symbol cycle.
January 16, 2017 – Mulayam Singh Yadav accused Akhilesh Yadav and said that the Chief Minister’s attitude towards Muslims is negative. If the Chief Minister does not listen to him, then he will fight against his own son.
March 11, 2017 – Akhilesh Yadav loses the Uttar Pradesh elections and resigns from his post but does not take responsibility for the defeat.
April 1, 2017 – In the rally, Mulayam Singh Yadav blamed Akhilesh Yadav for the defeat. He said that what could not happen to his father cannot happen to anyone.
May 3, 2017 – Shivpal Yadav said that if Akhilesh Yadav does not give the command of the party to Mulayam Singh, then he will leave the Samajwadi Party and form a new party.
