Wrestlers Protest: ‘Demonstration of strength’ of wrestlers at India Gate after temple-gurdwara, wrestling lost in ‘Dharma Yudh’ of players running for 1 month?

Top wrestlers of the country are protesting at Jantar Mantar from 23rd April. They are demanding the arrest of the President of Wrestling Federation of India.

Date: May 23, 2005, Place: India Gate, Time: 6:00 p.m. Usually there is a crowd of people at India Gate at this time. Somewhere someone is selling fruit chaat and somewhere someone is selling roses. Every day a fair is held from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan in which the heart of Delhi resides but on Tuesday the picture was different. The heart of Delhi had turned into a cantonment. Policemen were standing on both sides of India Gate holding ropes. Wherever the eyes were looking at the deserted India Gate, only barricades and policemen were visible.

Delhi’s heart changed in Cantonment

For the last one month, the wrestlers sitting on dharna had decided to go to India Gate. The Delhi Police had an idea that a crowd of supporters would gather, so the Rapid Action Force was also deployed at India Gate along with those in khaki uniforms. After some time slogans of Inquilab Zindabad were heard. Braving a dust storm and heat, a crowd of people with the tricolor in their hands reached the India Gate from Andhra Bhawan. It was led by Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia. Apart from Kisan Dal, Student Union, Mahila Morcha, Bhim Army, thousands of people also came to support the strike of wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Wrestlers repeated their demands by holding candles

Bajrang stood on the barricades and thanked all the visitors. They kept their demands and raised slogans of freedom. Vinesh said during this, “For the last one month we have been protesting (for the government to take action against Brij Bhushan) but it is a matter of shame that nothing has happened so far. Today, we took out a candle march at India Gate and we have come to know that such marches have been taken out in many parts of the country.

Wrestlers sought everyone’s support in this fight by lighting candles in their hands. But will the wrestlers be able to win this battle just by getting the support of the people. On April 23, the wrestlers sat on a dharna for the second time. This time, his entire emphasis was on providing justice to women players who were victims of sexual abuse. He is calling this fight a crusade for which he is ready to make any kind of sacrifice. He is giving more importance to this strike than the game.

What happened till now?

On 16 April, the Wrestling Federation of India announced elections for the new committee and the elections were to be held by 7 May. The investigation report of the Oversight Committee was not made public. On 23rd April the wrestlers again sat on strike. He called the Oversight Committee a fraud and accused the Delhi Police of not registering an FIR against Brij Bhushan Singh. On 25 April the wrestlers reached the Supreme Court and filed a petition against the Delhi Police. On 28 April, two FIRs were registered against Brij Bhushan Singh. After this, as per the demand of the wrestlers, the statement of the minor was recorded before the magistrate. Presently Delhi Police is probing the matter but when will it end.

How successful has the strike of the wrestlers been?

For the past one month, the wrestlers have made Jantar Mantar the Kurukshetra of their crusade. To win any battle, the three most important things are step-by-step (any work should be done step by step), systematic (sequential) and planned (running according to plan). He started the dharna with the demand of FIR, after the FIR was done, said that many cases are already registered against Brijbhushan, so another FIR will not have any effect. He put forth his demands one after the other in a phased manner.

Where will the strike of wrestlers go?

Wrestlers have tried to stay organized by doing several events in the past one month. He was sometimes seen doing candle march, sometimes reached Gurudwara and sometimes ancient Hanuman temple. He continued trying to connect people with him. Veteran leaders from Priyanka Gandhi to Arvind Kejriwal reached the protest site and supported the wrestlers. The wrestlers did not let the dharna get diluted amid the scorching heat, heavy rains and clashes with the Delhi Police. Talk about being planned, here the wrestlers are looking a bit weak. He is adamant on the arrest of Brijbhushan. They are now finding it difficult to bear the expenses of the strike. The Supreme Court has already asked him to go to the lower court. In such a situation, it will be important to see which option the wrestlers will go towards and how they will continue this fight.

wrestling is losing

Looking at the present situation, it is clear that the movement is not going to end soon. Indian wrestling is losing in this if anyone is found guilty after investigation. Top wrestlers of the country, who are the biggest hope of bringing medals for the country in the upcoming Asian Games and Olympics, are leaving the arena and spending the day on the pavement, leaving the mat and practicing on the road. Wrestlers who are not even a part of the dharna are also upset because of the smooth running of the federation.
