Two constables and two sub-inspectors including station in-charge Ashwini Kumar Singh have been suspended. The decision comes a day after the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) was ordered transferred on Tuesday (April 18). He was present outside Calvin Hospital in Prayagraj on the night of 15 April when Ateeq-Ashraf were attacked.
The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a three-member judicial panel to probe the killings, which will submit its report within two months. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to probe the murder of Atiq-Ashraf.
Many questions are being raised on the role of police
After the murder of Atiq Ashraf, many serious questions are being raised on the role of Uttar Pradesh Police. According to the Indian Express report, a police officer, when asked about being brought to the hospital late at night for a medical checkup, said that Atiq Ahmed was a patient of extreme diabetes and hypertension.

According to sources, Atiq and Ashraf were taken to Colvin Hospital for medical examination on Friday evening as well. The officer said, “On Saturday morning, when Ateeq Ahmed complained of some uneasiness, we called to meet a doctor in the lock-up.” It is not always necessary to take the accused to a hospital, sources in the UP police said. In serious and sensitive cases, the doctor is called in the lock-up itself. Why was it not done in this case?
- Why was the media allowed to get close to Atiq and Ashraf? It was the job of the police to identify the journalists who came with fake IDs and mikes. Why was this not done?
- Why such a free environment was given that the attackers reached so close to Atiq Ahmed, when an accused is murdered in police custody, it is a question mark on the governance.
