“Chandrachud was very studious, his notes were always complete” Sanjay Kishan Kaul told stories from college

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice (R) Sanjay Kishan Kaul were classmates. Both of them studied LLB together from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University. Both stayed together in the same section for six years.

Interestingly, before starting law studies, both of them had graduated in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, DU. Talking to Jansatta.com, Kaul says that this was very unusual because we had gone from Economics. People used to go to MBA after doing economics from Stephens or go to Delhi School of Economics. We were 10 people who went to do law.

Who else were your classmates?

Justice (R) Kaul says that apart from DY Chandrachud, his class includes Abhishek Manu Singhvi (senior lawyer and Congress leader), Parag Tripathi (senior lawyer and former Additional Solicitor General of India), Raman Kapoor (senior Supreme Court lawyer). and KP Krishnan (former IAS and professor at the Center for Policy Research).

Chandrachud- Kaul was very educated

Former judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul says that Justice DY Chandrachud was a very studious student. He recalls, “His notes were always complete. He was a very dedicated student. I was interested in different things. I had a different kind of personality. Sometimes he used to go into politics, sometimes he used to do theatre, he used to do other work also.”

Kaul further says, “Well, I used to take classes regularly. But when he started doing politics, he would miss class. In such a situation, the task was given to Dhananjay Sahab (DY Chandrachud) to take the notes properly. So that we can take notes from them. He used to take very detailed notes.”

On the other hand, in Kaul’s farewell speech, CJI Chandrachud had said that Justice (R) Kaul’s notes were in great demand. Recalling his college days, Chandrachud had said, “Sanjay was very careful about his notes in law college. His notes were in great demand. But Sanjay never gave the entire exercise book of his notes to anyone. Whenever someone asked for notes, he used to ask which day’s notes he wanted. Then he would take out that day’s page and give it to him. They also took the promise to return it the next day.”

Chandrachud had made the manifesto

Sanjay Kishan Kaul was not only interested in politics. In fact, he had also contested the student union elections. When Sanjay Kishan Kaul contested the student union elections, his classmate DY Chandrachud had prepared the manifesto for it. In Kaul’s farewell speech, CJI Chandrachud had recalled, “We used to be Sanjay’s supporters. I was given the task of making the manifesto. However, in the meantime Sanjay had a very serious accident. At that time we were thinking that Sanjay would get sympathy votes because of this accident. But that did not happen.” Let us tell you that Sanjay had lost the election. Speaking to Jansatta, he said that he did not fit into the way elections were conducted.
