Hyundai Verna reigns in March, beats Honda City to Maruti Ciaz in sales
Hyundai Verna has been launched by the company with new design, features and specifications which has made the sedan segment a hot topic.
These days the dominance of sedan cars is visible in the car sector, due to which new updates are happening in the cars present in this segment. Who would have thought that a segment with just 10 per cent market share would suddenly launch one new model after another? This was the case last month in March when Honda upgraded the City while Hyundai launched the new generation Verna.
Hyundai Verna Vs Honda City
With its radical looks and packed features, the new Hyundai Verna has managed to take on the popular Honda City. The Korean sedan sold 3,755 units leaving behind the Honda City, while the Japanese sedan grabbed the second position with 2,693 units. The Hyundai Verna is the second sedan in its segment after the Honda City to be equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). With the 2023 Verna managing to take the pole position in March 2023, the question begs, will it be able to retain it or history will repeat itself and the city will make a comeback?
Hyundai Verna With its segment leading wheelbase, the new Verna is available with two powertrains – a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine.
On the other hand, the Honda City is available in standard petrol and hybrid options. The former is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with 119bhp and 145Nm of torque. The hybrid gets a 125 bhp 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with 253Nm of torque.
The other Rivals: Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz
The Volkswagen Group’s twins, the Volkswagen Virtus and the Skoda Slavia, have been ranked third and fourth, respectively. The Virtus Edge managed to sell 1,792 units of its Czech sibling while the Slavia sold 1,574 units. Both the sedans offer two turbo petrol engine options with the first being a 1-litre and the second being a 1.5-litre engine.
The past two months have been a nightmare for Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, once a leader in the mid-size sedan category. Only 300 units of this sedan could be sold in the month of March. While 792 of it were sold in February. Can this sales growth mark the end of the Ciaz’s journey? This is unlikely as Maruti Suzuki refreshed the model in February this year and now offers ESP and hill hold assist as standard features for the automatic trims. The Ciaz is the oldest model in the segment and is powered by the 103bhp 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol.
