Lok Sabha security breached: Man jumped inside, shouted slogans outside, smoked, MPs said – second attack

On the 22nd anniversary of the attack on Parliament, once again a case of lapse in security of Parliament has come to light. On Wednesday (December 13), during the proceedings of the Lok Sabha in the new Parliament, two people jumped from the audience gallery and reached the middle of the House. This incident created chaos among the MPs and the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 o’clock.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary was in the House at the time of the incident. He came out and told the media that “Two youths jumped from the gallery and threw something, due to which gas was coming out. He was caught by the MPs, after which the security personnel took him out. The House has been adjourned till 2 pm. This is definitely a security breach.”

Let us inform that two suspicious people have also been detained from outside the Parliament House. Keep in mind that on December 13, 2001, there was a terrorist attack on the old Parliament House.

What was the scene like 22 years ago

On December 13, 2001, Pakistan’s terrorist group attacked the Parliament. Nine Indians lost their lives in the attack. Let’s take a look at what happened on this day 22 years ago:

At around 11:40 am on 13 December 2001, five terrorists entered the Parliament House complex by placing a fake Home Ministry sticker on the windshield of their car. On suspicion, the car was asked to turn back, after which the terrorists got down and started firing. As soon as the shot was fired, an alarm was sounded and the doors of all the buildings were closed. At that time more than 100 ministers/MPs were present inside the Parliament.

The shootout lasted for more than 30 minutes, in which five terrorists were killed. Eight security personnel and a gardener also lost their lives. 15 people were injured in this attack.

The then Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani had said that the attack was jointly carried out by Pakistan’s terrorist organizations Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. He said that “all five terrorists involved in the suicide squad were Pakistani nationals… Their Indian associates have been arrested.” Advani had described the attack as “the most dangerous act in the nearly two-decade-long history of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in India”.

On the day of the attack, the police arrested Afzal Guru, cousin Shaukat Hussain Guru, Shaukat’s wife Afsana Guru and SAR Geelani, a lecturer in Arabic at Delhi University. Guru, Geelani and Shaukat were sentenced to death and Afsana was acquitted by the trial court on 29 December 2001.

Geelani was acquitted in 2003, while Shaukat was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in 2005. In September 2006, the Supreme Court gave its verdict to hang Afzal Guru.

Then President Pranab Mukherjee rejected the mercy petition filed by Guru’s wife on February 3, 2013, and he was hanged six days later. The Guru’s body was buried in Tihar Jail itself.
