Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh elections: Only 18 women among BJP’s 162 candidates

On October 9, BJP released the list of 162 candidates for the assembly elections to be held in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Among these, the number of female candidates is 18 (i.e. 11.11 percent).

Let us tell you that recently the Narendra Modi government led by the ruling BJP at the Center has passed the Women’s Reservation Bill and made it a law, in which there is a provision to reserve one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies. However, it has been said that delimitation should be done before implementing this law.

Due to the limitation condition, nothing can be said with certainty as to when this law will come into effect. But, if the parties give one-third of the tickets to women, then automatically their number in the legislature will increase to one-third. But, parties do not seem to be in favor of giving them ‘right to reservation’ in this manner.
