Bengal Teachers Recruitment Scam: Former Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee wept during a virtual court hearing on Wednesday (September 14, 2022). The two are currently in judicial custody after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the teacher recruitment scam.

During the court hearing, Partha Chatterjee told the judge, ‘I am very concerned about my image in public. I was a student of economics. Before becoming a minister, I was the leader of the opposition.

Appealing to the court, he said that I am a victim of politics. Please ask ED to visit my house and my assembly constituency once. I am LLB and I was given a British scholarship. My daughter lives in the UK. How can I involve myself in such scam? I should be given medical treatment before justice.

Appealing to the court, Partha Chatterjee’s lawyer said that Partha Chatterjee has moved the court for bail. My client is cooperating with the investigating agency. He is ready to cooperate in future also. Please bail them out under any circumstances. Partha Chatterjee told the court, ‘I want to live in peace. Please allow me to live my life. Give me bail under any circumstances’.

Soon after Chatterjee, his aide Arpita Mukherjee was produced before the judge. Mukherjee told the court, ‘I don’t know how this happened to me. I really don’t know how and from where the Enforcement Directorate recovered such a huge amount from my house.

The judge then asked Arpita if she knew where to get the money. To this Arpita said, “From my residence.” The judge further asked, “Are you the owner of the house?” To this Arpita replied in the affirmative and said that she is the owner of that house. The judge continued, “Then, according to the law, you are accountable.”

To this Arpita said, ‘But I have no information about the money recovered. I belong to a middle class family. My father is no more. My 82 year old mother is not feeling well. I belong to a simple family. How can ED raid my house’. In response, the judge said, ‘ED can raid any house if it is required in their investigation. They have power’.

Let us tell you, in July, the ED had recovered about 50 crore cash, gold and jewelery from Arpita Mukherjee’s residence in Kolkata. The agency had also found incriminating documents which were allegedly said to be related to the Bengal teacher recruitment scam.

After Partha Chatterjee’s name was linked to the Bengal teacher recruitment scam, Chatterjee was first removed from the post of minister and then removed from all party posts. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that if any allegation is proved, then action should be taken against her leader.
