Punjab SAD Simranjit Singh Mann: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Simranjit Singh Mann has been placed under house arrest from his home in Talania. Simranjeet Singh is MP from Sangrur. Also, many of his party workers have been detained by the police. According to party workers, Mann was not allowed to step out of his Sangrur home and was reportedly kept under house arrest till the filing of this report. It is being told that on behalf of Shiromani Akali Amritsar, today they were going to stage a protest in support of Bhana Siddu.

Simranjit Singh Mann had called for a rail roko agitation on February 1 at ‘Dohla Rail Crossing’, a major crossing hub for long distance trains from Punjab to Delhi, which would have affected a large number of trains. However, the ‘Rail Roko’ protest could not succeed as the police detained several party workers and leaders from Sangrur, Barnala, Malerkotla, Mansa and other places.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) youth wing national president Tejinder Singh Deol told The Indian Express, ‘Simranjit Singh Mann has been placed under house arrest at his Sangrur home since morning. Police are deployed inside and outside their house. Apart from this, several youths were picked up from Dohala Railway Crossing in Dhuri, while many others were picked up from their homes. Till now we do not have correct information about the number of detained activists.

Deol said, “This is against freedom of speech… Today it is Bhana Sidhu, tomorrow it could be someone else. Now is the time when we need to stand united and raise our voice.”

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Firozpur district in-charge Jagjit Singh said, another leader Hardeep Singh Narike was detained from Amargarh town of Malerkotla, while Lakha Singh was detained from Guraya village.

Earlier, Simranjit Singh Mann had called meetings in various villages of Amargarh, Malerkotla, Barnala and Sangrur in the last few days in support of blogger Bhana Sidhu, a critic of the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab. Who is Bhana Sidhu?

Kaka Sidhu alias Bhana Sidhu is a social media influencer resident of Kot Dunna village of Barnala district. He was arrested from Ludhiana on January 21 for allegedly demanding Rs 10,000 from a woman who ran a travel agency. Before his release on January 26, the Patiala Police had taken him into custody in a snatching case registered against him last year. Sidhu’s arrest led to an unprecedented gathering of people and fans in his native village on January 29 in his support.

Later, a case of extortion was also registered against him on the complaint of immigration and travel agents of Abohar, Mohali and Sangrur. His brother Aamna Sidhu has also been booked in an extortion case filed by a Mohali-based immigration consultant.
